Update on Cam – Day 8

Today’s update will be short and sweet.
Last night Monz and I stayed the night at the hospital again giving Mum and Brooke a well deserved night off. We tried to keep Cam awake long enough in the afternoon so he would have a good nights sleep but it was another relatively restless night for Cam and he finally managed to fall asleep around 3am and got a few hours in before the nurses started their morning duties.
Today on a brighter note, we have noticed more some more improvements with his memory loss, for the first time since his crash he was able to take with the help from two nurses 4 small steps from his bed to a chair (when he tried this yesterday, his legs wouldn’t hold his own weight) and he was able to sit up and eat his first full meal which was a Spaghetti Bolognaise which Brooke brought back from how hotel.
Our Dad arrived today and Cam was stoked to see him, although he was pretty tired when Dad got to the hospital he managed a quick smile and went back to sleep. He’s been asking for Dad the last few days so I’m sure when we go back to the hospital shortly, he’ll be stoked.
We also had a visit today from our new friend, Ana who has been very helpful and generous whilst we have been here in Madrid. It was cool for her to come in and met her in person and i’m sure the feeling was like wise for her.
Cam also was able to have a quick chat with one of his best mate Bilko on the phone today, he had no problem remembering who Bilko was and to me that’s another sign of great progress. Anything like this helps to stimulate his brain so the more the better.
We are in the process of working out a plan to get Cam home as the doctors feel he’ll be ok to travel home next Friday. They say it will be much better for the rehab process for him to be home. When he arrives at home, it won’t be over by anymeans. There will be more and regular hospital visits, lot’s of rehab and hard work. He keeps proving to us that he can beat anything, so i have no doubt he’ll be back on a bike in 6 months time. He’s mentioned a few times that he wants to be back on by Christmas 2009. We’ll just have to wait and see hey buddy.
Thanks again for all of your well wishes, i read alot of them to Cam last night and he seamed pretty proud himself. (He still doesn’t understand he’s landed 25 out of 26 Double flips)
To all our family and friends back in Australia, thanks for the support and love. Brooke, Monz, Mum and myself would have found it very hard to get through this week without you.
If i don’t get a chance to write an update tomorrow i’m sure someone will, I’m off to see Real Madrid play tomorrow night. Might as well make the most of being in Madrid. Thanks RED BULL Spain!
Mick

Great to here you are on the mend, your a tough Aussie mate and a great entertainer. I seen my first live Crusty show in Brisbane this year and one of my highlights was your double backflip. This was also a first for me seeing one live. When I heard of your accident, I was shocked, you had turned a difficult trick into a regular trick at your desposal. I hope I am privelaged enough to see you ride again, you are another true icon of Australian freestyle motorcross. May your recovery be a speedy one, look forward to reading the updates.
All the best.

Man, you are one tough dude! So happy to read of your progress. My son, Cam Vincent Rodgers (15 months) is obsessed with my quad! He calls it his RHUUMM, RHUUMM and loves to go for rides with his dad. He always stands on the gas tank with his hands on the bars and leans out over the front as far as he can while lifting one leg out to the side( not while we are moving ofcourse, yet!lol) as a fan of the sport it’s awsome. As a father it scares the hell out of me! I hope this put a smile on your face and please take your time healing, as long as you need! We will still be here as your fans! Love to you, your family and friends, The Rodgers Family ( Mulege, Baja, Mexico)

It was just the other week when i was watching your segment on MXTV and on the redbull x fighters and wishing that i could grow up to be just like you ( They say that you have to set your goals high). Then the next week i heard about your crash and i have been stressing ever since.
Everyone Knows you will be back on the bike by the end of the year and doing your double flips.
We all wish you the best for your recovery from Victoria.

Stay strong Cam.
All the best to you and your family.
It is good to know you are getting better. My son and I have been so worried about you, we were at the show in Las Ventas on july 17th, and after the accident no one mentioned a single word about how you were doing, even spanish sports media.
Thank you for the good example you give, as a sportsman and with your effort and strength I am sure you will recover from the accident.
Buena suerte
All the best,
